Jul 04, 2017 Fifty Shades Darker is a 2012 erotic romance novel by British author E. It is the second installment in the Fifty Shades trilogy that traces the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey.
This is definitely the case for the first two movies, and for the final installment -- Fifty Shades Freed, which hit theaters Friday (Feb. 9) -- the soundtrack includes songs from Hailee Steinfeld, Rita Ora and Liam Payne. To get prepped for the newest soundtrack (and movie) release, check out our picks for the top 10 songs from the Fifty Shades trilogy below:
Beyoncé - 'Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)'
For the first movie, Beyoncé took her iconic horn-infused song and remixed it into a smooth and slowed-down version, completely unrecognizable from the original. The distorted piano and airy vocals made it a perfect addition to the movie, which has dark themes in addition to the sexual undertones.
Ellie Goulding - 'Love Me Like You Do'
Ellie Goulding’s track became an unofficial theme song for the series, appearing on the soundtrack for the first and third films and in the trailer for the latter. The upbeat love song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Goulding went on to add it to her third studio album, Delirium, due to its success.
The Weeknd - 'Earned It'
The Weeknd’s Fifty Shades of Grey track was also featured on his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness. The song featured a strong orchestral element and also scored an Oscar nomination for best original song and two Grammy noms, taking one home for best R&B performance. The song then went on to peak at No. 3 on the Hot 100.
Taylor Swift & Zayn - 'I Don’t Wanna Live Forever'
After a brief hiatus, Taylor Swift released this track with former One Direction member Zayn Malik in December 2016. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 and even received a Grammy nomination for best song written for visual media. It features Swift and Malik going back and forth singing about their doomed relationship over heavy beats and appeared in the second movie, Fifty Shades Darker.
Halsey - 'Not Afraid Anymore'
Before she was “Bad at Love,” Halsey belted out the dark and seductive track “Not Afraid Anymore” for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, featuring her distinct vocals over an intense electro-pop beat: “I am not afraid anymore/ Standing in the eye of the storm/ Ready to face this, dying to taste this, sick sweet warmth.”
Sia - 'Helium'
Sia’s emotional ballad “Helium” was also featured on the second movie's soundtrack. The track features a slow piano buildup and gut-wrenching lyrics -- “Help me out of this hell/ Your love lifts me up like helium” -- sung by Sia’s powerhouse vocals.
John Legend - 'One Woman Man'
John Legend added a groovy slow jam to the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack with “One Woman Man” -- a track about finding your one true love. Of course, Legend is accompanied by his iconic piano.
Hailee Steinfeld & Bloodpop - 'Capital Letters'
Hailee Steinfeld contributed her own love song, the synth-heavy “Capital Letters,” to the final movie, Fifty Shades Freed. The dance track is accompanied by a fun video featuring Steinfeld and her significant other running through Paris, as most lovers do.
Liam Payne & Rita Ora - 'For You'
Liam Payne and Rita Ora joined forces to drop an '80s-inspired track for the third installment in the Fifty Shades franchise. Ora’s high vocals echo over kick drums and heavy synths, perfectly accompanying Payne’s low vocals in this “looking for love” song.
Julia Michaels - 'Heaven'
Julia Michaels dropped this seductive track for Fifty Shades Freed last month. The song is slightly reminiscent of her hit “Issues,” featuring a light backing track and focusing on Michaels’ whispery vocals.
