Ricoh is a hardware company that started in 1962 creating office imaging technology such as fax machines and cameras. Ricoh continued to expand and grow, making the first CD-RW drive in 1996, and currently supplies hardware for numerous computer manufacturers. The Ricoh MMC Host Controller is the software that drives the Ricoh hardware in a computer.
MMC
The abbreviation in the Ricoh MMC Host Controller stands for Multi-media Card and refers to different types of memory cards that can be read through the Ricoh card reader. Typically the Ricoh MMC is a 5-in-1 memory card reader that can read Secure Digital cards, MultiMediaCards, Memory Sticks, Memory Stick Pros and xD cards. The MMC reader can recognize and mount any one of those card types as removable storage in a computer system.
Host Controller
In computer hardware hierarchies there are hosts, or masters, and slaves. The hosts give instructions and the slaves receive the instructions. This allows the system to function well without all the hardware trying to tell the other hardware what to do. Knowing that the Ricoh MMC is a host controller means that it controls other hardware -- in this case flash memory cards -- so the computer will use the Ricoh MMC Host Controller to access, read and write to the memory cards connected through it. Computers also use a USB host controller to give instructions to all the USB devices connected to it, for example.
Driver Issues
Most often the Ricoh MMC Host Controller will come to your attention if it's not working properly. The main reason why it wouldn't be working properly is if its drivers were not installed correctly or became corrupted. If the drivers don't work then the software -- in this case the Windows operating system -- will show an error with the Ricoh MMC Host Controller. You can check in the computer's Device Manager to see if the driver for the card reader is installed correctly. If it isn't there will be a yellow or red icon next to the listing for the Ricoh MMC Host Controller.
Driver Updates
Ricoh does not directly support the MMC Host Controller, but instead sells the hardware to computer manufacturers for them to install, configure and support. So if you have a driver issue with your Ricoh MMC Host controller you won't find an updated driver at Ricoh's website but rather at the site of your computer manufacturer. Look on your computer manufacturer's site under Support or Driver Downloads for the correct drivers for your computer model.
